Dr. Joe Spencer CPhys CEng
Director
Joe is a quantum physicist (PhD) with over a decade of experience spanning quantum technology, defence science and advanced engineering. He began his career as a scientist within Dstl, working across quantum sensing, radar and defence systems, and has since supported technical programmes across the UK MOD, industry and the wider international quantum ecosystem.
His work ranges from fundamental science and technology assessment through to systems engineering, defence trials and national strategy, including shaping UK quantum programmes, supporting UK Space Agency technology roadmaps and contributing to European quantum initiatives.
Joe founded IoniQ to bring genuine scientific depth to technical consulting, while developing the next generation of scientists and engineers with the commercial and delivery skills needed to turn great science into real-world capability.
Outside work, Joe is a keen sailor and can usually be persuaded that almost any meeting would be better held on a boat.
Rhys Jones MMath
Senior Modelling Engineer
Rhys is a mathematician and modelling engineer with over ten years of experience in analysis, modelling and simulation across the defence sector. His expertise spans RF systems, radar, complex weapons and electronic countermeasures, with particular strengths in mathematical modelling, signal processing and simulation of dynamic systems.
Before joining IoniQ, Rhys spent seven years at QinetiQ working on weapons modelling and advanced radar systems. At IoniQ, he works closely with UK defence customers on research and modelling of next-generation RF countermeasures, translating complex analysis into practical engineering insight and supporting technical decision-making.
Outside work, Rhys is an enthusiastic maker with a passion for 3D printing, and, when he's not building models for defence, can often be found building worlds as a Dungeon Master.
